Paper Orchestra!

Wednesday, May 10, 2017 by Alice Schuth | Programs

A new session of the Paper Orchestra Program (POP) is underway in Whiting, ME. Eight energetic and excited young musicians are learning songs, dances, finger plays, and string instrument skills, while building a paper instrument. Last week the students selected their instruments. We have four violinists, one violist, two cellists, and one bassist.

All of these guys are under the age of six, some are not yet four. So far, we are having a blast with the assistance of two young EStrings members, and High School EString student Hailey Bell as intern. A comprehensive curriculum is in the works with the help of Hailey Bell and Cornell University graduate Sarah McDonald.

We have been performing at the Eastport Memorial Nursing home this winter. We hope to perform there again in May, for nursing home week!

We are planning a recital sometime in May, at a church in Perry, ME. The quartets will perform!

Three quartets have formed. All of them are doing CAD (Creative Ability Development). The Middle school and High School groups are also working with Geoffrey Hudson's The Quartet Project. The early elementary quartet has performed a piece composed for them. "Tock" is now a favorite, as they continue to expand their repertoire!
